- The following is a technical document discussing Duke Nukem:Manhattan Project's
- hardware and operating system compatibility. This document is current up to the
- time of this game's development being complete.
-
- ***************************
- *** System Requirements ***
- ***************************
- [ Official minimum requirements ]
- o.s: Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP (with DirectX 8.0 or higher).
- cpu: Intel P2 350mhz/AMD K6-2 400mhz/Cyrix M2 433mhz or comparable.
- mem: 64Mb for Win9x/ME, 128Mb for Win2k/XP.
- vid: Direct3D 8/OpenGl video card with 8Mb.
- dsk: 300 MB of hard drive space.
- snd: DirectX 8 compatible sound card.
-
- [ Official recommended system ]
- cpu: Intel P3/AMD K7 500mhz or faster/VIA C3 600mhz or faster.
- mem: 128Mb or more for Win9x/ME. 192Mb or more for Win2k/XP.
- vid: Direct3D8/OpenGl AGP video card with 16Mb or more of video memory.
-
- ***************************
- *** Manual Updates ***
- ***************************
- The manual mentions an F6 command. That has been removed for the final version
- of the game. Use F5 to quicksave your game at any point except during boss battles.
-
- ****************************
- *** Sound Card Issues ***
- ****************************
- Due the fact that some older sound cards do not properly support hardware
- accelerated 3D sound mixing, this game will default to emulated software
- 3D sound. Some older sound cards may cause crashes, or studdery performance
- if this is enabled. If you wish to re-enable hardware accelerated 3D sound,
- you may run the Quick Configuration utility (DukeNukemMP.exe) and disable
- "Disable Hardware 3D Sound" from the Advanced dialog. If you are experiencing
- voice overs being cut off at the end, try toggling this option as well.
-
- If you experience problems when hardware 3D sound is in use, you may also
- try decreasing or increasing your hardware acceleration for your sound card
- via the Sounds and Multimedia Properties via your windows control panel.
-
- ****************************
- *** Compatibility Issues ***
- ****************************
- [ Operating System compatibility ]
- This game requires Microsoft Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP, or higher and
- DirectX 8.0 or higher. OpenGl support is included, but not necessary.
- This game will *not* run on a Windows NT3.5, NT4, or Windows 3.1 (or lower)
- system.
-
- Windows 95 Release A: This OS only supports as high as DirectX 8.0. For OpenGl
- support, download the OpenGl patch for Windows 95
- Release A from Microsoft's web site.
-
- Windows 95 Release B: This OS (and all higher versions of Windows 95) only
- support as high as DirectX 8.0.
-
- Windows 98/ME : These OS's support DirectX 8.1.
-
- Windows 2000/XP : These OS's support DirectX 8.1. It is recommended that
- systems running these OS's have 64Mb more memory than
- a comparable Win9x system due to the increased OS memory
- footprint.
-
- [ CPU compatibility ]
- Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project requires an Intel 80386 compatible processor with
- an 80387 compatible floating point coprocessor. MMX, Extended MMX, SSE, SSE2,
- 3DNOW, 3DNOW Extensions and Cyrix EMMI Extensions are all supported and
- recommended, but not required.
-
- ** This is not a list of officially supported cpu's. **

- Winchip2
-
- [ Video card compatibility ]
- The following is a list of known 3d accelerated video cards (that should fall
- in the class of technical capability which Duke Nukem:Manhattan Project
- requires), and whether they were tested compatible, incompatible, or
- were untested.
-
- ** This is not a list of officially supported cards, **
- ** nor is it a list of acceptably performing cards. **
- ** Win9x includes Windows 95, 98, and ME, unless otherwise noted **
- ** Win2k includes Windows 2000 and XP, unless otherwise noted **

- *** Performance Tips ***
- ************************
- 1.) Always make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card.
-
- 2.) Some video cards perform better under one OS than another. Likewise,
- some video cards perform better under OpenGl than Direct3D. If you are
- unhappy with performance, try switching to OpenGl
-
- 3.) For faster performance try turning down the detail level in the Graphics
- options.
-
- 4.) Try playing the game with a joystick. Many people feel this game plays
- much better with a good console style joystick than with a keyboard.
-
- 5.) Performance varies greatly depending on a machine's hardware and
- software setup. For example, a machine that is finely tuned with a
- clean operating system (OS) installation will perform much better than
- a similar machine with an OS that is in poor maintenance. Also,
- a certain combo of cpu/motherboard/3d video card can sometimes
- cause better or worse performance. Unfortunately this can lead to
- machines that technically are greater spec than minimum system
- requirements not being able to run the game properly. It can also mean
- that a machine under minimum system spec (a Pentium II 266mhz for
- example) can run the game acceptably in the hands of the right user.
- Always make sure your OS is clean (avoid background tasks like mp3
- player startup apps, etc.) and all hard drives are defragmented.
